Hardy kiwi (Actinidia arguta) or Arctic kiwi, which is a cold-tolerant, vigorous vine known for its fast growth and lush foliage.
🥝 Detailed Description of the Kiwi vine:
Growth Habit:
This kiwi vine is growing in a dense, shrubby-vine form, sprawling in thick, tangled mounds. Kiwi plants are typically vigorous climbers, but can be unmanaged or intentionally allowed to trail and mound rather than being trellised.Leaves:
The leaves are oval to heart-shaped with pointed tips, and they appear bright green and glossy.
They grow alternately along the stems, and the foliage is dense, offering a lush, tropical appearance.
Margins are smooth (entire), and veins are clearly visible.
Stems and Vines:
The vines are woody at the base and become slender and flexible further out.
Kiwi vines can spread rapidly, and their twining growth allows them to climb if supported, or sprawl outward when left untrained, as seen here.
Flowers and Fruit (not visible in the image but worth noting):
Kiwi flowers are small, white or cream-colored, and fragrant, appearing in spring.
If pollinated (typically needing both male and female plants), they produce small, smooth-skinned fruits, bite-sized and edible with the skin on.
Environment:
hardy Kiwi need to be situated in an open, sunny area, which is ideal for kiwis, as they require full sun and well-drained soil.
This variety likely tolerates cold climates, as Actinidia arguta is much hardier than the fuzzy kiwi (Actinidia deliciosa).
This plant, when trained on trellises, can be both ornamental and productive, yielding sweet, grape-sized kiwis in late summer to early fall.
